The job hierarchy translated into project structures, contracts, and accounting

Maconomy organises all project work through a single job-and-task hierarchy that carries budget, WBS, time, expense, procurement, WIP, billing, revenue recognition, and close. D365 separates those concerns across projects, WBS tasks, categories, forecasts, contracts, funding sources, billing rules, WIP accounts, and revenue recognition policies. This chapter translates the Maconomy model into D365 Project Management and Accounting, covers time and expense capture, resource planning, intercompany delivery, and explains the People Planner decision gate.

What you will be able to do

Introduction

Maconomy is a project-centric ERP. The job is the single organising structure: it carries the customer relationship, the contract, the work breakdown, the budget, time and expense capture, procurement, WIP, billing, revenue recognition, and close.

Job-to-Project Classification

Every active Maconomy job must be classified into an approved D365 project archetype before any field mapping begins. The project type controls accounting behaviour — what posts to WIP, what is billable, and how revenue is recognised.

Task Decomposition and Categories

A Maconomy job task can simultaneously serve as a scheduling node, a time charge code, a billing unit, an accounting dimension, and a reporting discriminator. D365 separates these concerns.

Contracts, Funding, and Billing Rules

Maconomy's contract model varies by client and add-on. Public evidence does not establish a universal contract-line and funding structure equivalent to either Finance or Dataverse project contracts. Discovery must capture the full commercial arrangement before mapping.

Budgets, Forecasts, and Estimates

A Maconomy job budget serves multiple purposes: approval envelope, cost forecast, resource plan, commitment baseline, and estimate input. D365 separates these into distinct mechanisms.

Time and Expense Capture

The programme must select one authoritative time-entry and approval path. Running parallel systems creates conflicting actuals that are difficult to audit.

WIP, Revenue Recognition, and Project Close

D365 manages WIP through the estimate system. For each project group, the estimate method determines how cost and revenue are recognised:

Intercompany Project Delivery

Maconomy supports cross-company time and expense charging through intercompany invoices. D365 Finance handles this through intercompany project accounting.

The People Planner Decision Gate

People Planner is Maconomy's resource-planning module. It supports graphical allocation, skill matching, capacity management, bookings, utilisation calculation, and forecast scenarios. D365 has no single equivalent that provides guaranteed parity.

Summary

The Maconomy job is a monolithic structure that carries every aspect of project delivery. D365 disaggregates this into projects, contracts, funding sources, categories, WBS tasks, estimates, and invoice proposals — each governed independently. The migration is not a field-level copy;
