Journals, periods, currencies and close

How Maconomy journal types, finance entries, fiscal calendars, company-specific exchange rates and periodic entries translate into D365 journal names, ledger calendars, exchange-rate types and the financial-foundation acceptance gate.

What you will be able to do

Introduction

Maconomy's journal and period infrastructure governs how financial transactions enter the ledger, when they can be posted, how they are sequenced and how currencies are translated.

Journal types and journal names

Maconomy organises journals by type — each type carries a purpose, a set of posting rules, a number series and approval requirements. A general journal for manual entries behaves differently from a project-cost journal or an intercompany recharge journal, even though all produce finance entries.

Finance entries and posted vouchers

A Maconomy finance entry is the atomic unit of ledger posting — a line carrying account, dimensions, amount, currency, date and reference. In D365, this maps to two distinct objects depending on state:

Fiscal calendars and periods

Maconomy's fiscal calendar defines years, periods and their open/closed status per company. D365 separates this into two constructs:

Currencies and exchange rates

Maconomy supports multi-currency transactions with company-specific exchange rates. Each company can maintain its own rate tables for different purposes (daily transaction rates, month-end rates, budget rates).

Number sequences and voucher control

Maconomy assigns voucher numbers through journal-type-specific series. D365 uses number sequences that are configured per legal entity and per journal name.

Posting restrictions and security

D365 journal names carry posting restrictions that limit which accounts and dimensions a journal can post to. This is a control mechanism that replaces any source-system restriction on journal usage:

The financial-foundation acceptance gate

The playbook defines an acceptance gate that must be passed before transactional migration begins. Nothing moves until:

Reversing and periodic journals

Maconomy supports periodic entries (recurring accruals, allocations, charges) and reversing entries (entries that automatically reverse in the following period). D365 provides both capabilities:

Summary

The journal, period and currency infrastructure is the operational plumbing of the financial migration. It is less visible than the chart of accounts but equally critical — a misconfigured journal name, a missing adjustment period or a single inverted exchange rate can produce errors that persist for months before detection.
