Introduction

Manufacturing is the deepest functional domain in a Sage X3 to D365 Finance & Operations programme. X3 spans discrete and process manufacturing through a single work order function, supports formulas with co-products and by-products, and ships vertical pre-builds for process industries that go well beyond generic ERP manufacturing.

Formulas and BOMs: the structural split

Sage X3 uses a single Bills of Material construct for both discrete-manufacturing components and process-manufacturing ingredients. The distinction is carried at the item level — a formula-configured item uses additional attributes for potency, technical sheets and batch-oriented controls, but the underlying BOM function serves both…

Routings, operations and work centres

X3 routings define the operation sequence required to produce an item: operations with codes and sequence numbers, setup time, run time per unit, queue time and overlap quantity per operation, a work centre assignment per operation, and cost rates derived from the work centre.

Work orders and the production order lifecycle

The X3 work order function (GESMFG) is the central manufacturing execution document. It carries a BOM (or formula), a routing, a quantity to produce, planned dates, and a series of statuses governing permitted actions.

Quality control and non-conformance

X3 quality control ties inspections to trigger points: receipt of purchased goods, production completion, lot-status changes, and in-process checkpoints. The quality module can block lot disposition until inspection passes and enforce certificate-of-analysis requirements.

Production costing, cost roll-up and variance analysis

X3 supports multiple costing approaches: standard cost, moving average, FIFO, and analytical cost models. For manufacturing, the most common is standard cost — a planned cost per item derived from a cost roll-up that explodes the BOM or formula and accumulates material, labour, machine and overhead costs.

Co-products, by-products, subcontracting and vertical pre-builds

X3 supports co-products (joint outputs sharing production cost) and by-products (incidental outputs with minimal cost burden) on work orders. In D365, these features are exclusive to process manufacturing — they exist only on formula/batch orders, not on discrete production orders.

Wave 5: loading in-flight work orders

Open work orders migrate at Wave 5 — open production, projects and assets. At this point, items, BOMs, formulas, routes, resources, and the costing configuration must already exist in D365 (loaded in Wave 2).
