Finance modelling and dimension design

Translate Workday's Ledger Accounts, Account Sets, Worktag taxonomy, Books of Account, and period-close model into D365 main accounts, financial dimensions, account structures, posting layers, and the D365 close process.

What you will be able to do

Introduction

Finance modelling is where the Workday-to-D365 migration moves from conceptual to consequential. The decisions made in this module — which Worktag Types become financial dimensions, how Spend and Revenue Categories are treated, how multiple Books of Account are expressed in D365's ledger model — determine the shape of every Trial…

Ledger Account, Account Set, and Chart of Accounts

Workday's Ledger Account is the natural account: a number, a name, an account class (Asset, Liability, Equity, Revenue, Expense), and a posting type (debit-normal or credit-normal). Ledger Accounts are organised into hierarchies for reporting and consolidation.

The Worktag Taxonomy and the Dimension Design Decision

Worktag Type triage is the first design workshop that decides what the future chart will feel like. Do not start from the D365 dimension list. Start from the active Workday Worktag Types and ask what each type does in actual postings, reports and approvals.

Account Structures and Advanced Rule Structures

Allowed Worktag Types in Workday are the source for D365 Account Structure and Advanced Rule Structure design. For each Ledger Account, list required and allowed Worktag Types, group accounts with the same profile, then create small account structures with advanced rules for exceptions.

Books of Account, Ledger Types, and Parallel Views

Workday Books of Account, Account Sets and consolidation choices should be mapped one book at a time. The tempting shortcut is to load every book into one D365 ledger with a dimension value called Book.

Currencies, Periods, and the Close

Workday's fiscal calendar and currency configuration translate directly. Each Workday Company has a base currency and a fiscal calendar with named periods; these become the D365 legal entity's accounting currency and the FiscalCalendar / FiscalCalendarPeriod records.

Summary

Finance modelling translates Workday's open, Worktag-driven accounting model into D365's closed, structure-governed equivalent. The translation is design-heavy and consequential.
