Decide whether source production becomes D365 production control, a light assembly redesign, an ISV or a retirement — and map bills of materials and open orders only once that decision is signed.
Manufacturing is the domain on this path where the evidence is thinnest, the client variation is widest, and the temptation to over-engineer is strongest.
The playbook lists four target modes. Choose one per production process, not one per client, because a single estate can legitimately need two.
Once the mode is chosen, bills of materials are the most tractable artefact in the domain. The concept mapping rates the structural mapping as direct while flagging what has to be added: simple source BOMs may still require effectivity, site and costing redesign.
D365 models production capability through operations resources — machines, tools, human resources, facilities — organised into resource groups, with calendars, capabilities and capacity. Routes define operations, their sequence and their resource requirements.
The target production order has a lifecycle with more stages and more accounting consequence than a lightweight source order: created, estimated, scheduled, released, started, reported as finished, ended. Costs attach at several of those stages, and the transition between them posts.
The source posting rules rate production posting at medium confidence and note that it is often redesigned because Business One production is lighter than D365 production control.
Where the source runs MRP, note carefully that planning recommendations are not migrated. They are outputs of a planning run against a demand and supply picture that the target will hold differently.
Reasonably supported: the structural mapping of bills of materials to BOM and version structures; the instruction to migrate only open or required production state; the warning that lightweight source production needs redesign rather than direct carryover; the production posting families in the target.
Choose the target mode first — production control, light assembly and kitting redesign, partial retirement, or ISV — before mapping any structure. Light source production means undocumented requirements, not a small scope.
