Plex is a plant-centric manufacturing platform. It manages production, quality, inventory, procurement and financial accounting for factories. It does not manage projects.

Why Plex Has No Project Accounting

Plex was built for repetitive and discrete manufacturing. Its mental model is: parts flow through work centres on a schedule, consuming materials and time, accumulating cost against production orders and reporting variances against standards. Every transaction belongs to a plant, a part, a work centre and a cost centre.

The D365 Project Model: First Principles

A Plex practitioner can think of project types as answering two questions: "Is someone paying us for this?" (time-and-material or fixed-price) and "Does the result become an asset on our balance sheet?" (investment).

Manufacturing Scenarios That Warrant Project Accounting

A manufacturer builds or procures tooling (dies, moulds, fixtures, jigs) for a production line. The tooling costs must be tracked, controlled against a budget and capitalised as a fixed asset when the tooling enters service.
