The conceptual re-projection

Why an IFS migration is not a table-copy exercise — and what the Logical Unit mesh, the Code String, PostingCtrl, and IFS's project-and-asset centre of gravity mean for every design decision that follows.

What you will be able to do

Introduction

Every ERP migration eventually confronts the same uncomfortable truth: the two systems do not merely store data in different tables — they reason about the business in different conceptual languages.

The Logical Unit mesh

The most distinctive structural feature of IFS — and the one with the fewest D365 equivalents — is the Logical Unit (LU). An LU is IFS's atomic unit of design, deployment, and runtime management. It bundles, in one named object:

The pipeline both systems share

Underneath the differences, IFS and D365 share the same four-step pipeline. Naming it gives the programme a shared frame for every subsequent conversation.

The Voucher and PostingCtrl

The Voucher is IFS's universal accounting envelope. Every accounting event — inventory movement, customer invoice, purchase invoice, work-order cost, project transaction, fixed-asset depreciation, manual GL journal — produces a Voucher. A Voucher header (VOUCHER_TAB) carries the Company, Accounting Year, Voucher Type, and Voucher No;

IFS's centre of gravity

IFS was built for asset-intensive, project-driven industries. Two operational realities drove its design from its earliest releases.

What this means for the programme

PostingCtrl translation is the defining workstream. Every active Posting Type in the customer's IFS environment must be extracted, documented as an intent, and re-expressed through the appropriate D365 posting-profile surface. This is the single largest design exercise in the financial migration, and it starts on day one.

IFS Cloud source landscape: what the engine is really reading

An IFS-to-D365 migration does not start with random Oracle tables. It starts with the IFS Cloud source landscape and with a decision about which layer is authoritative for each kind of data.

Summary

IFS and D365 F&O both achieve accounting perfection. They do it through different abstraction choices, and a migration is the work of re-projecting one set of choices onto the other.
