Introduction

Business Central's manufacturing capability covers a spectrum from simple assembly (Assembly BOMs and Assembly Orders) through full discrete manufacturing (Production BOMs, Routings, Work Centres, Machine Centres, and Production Orders with five lifecycle statuses).

Production BOMs and BOM versions

A BC Production BOM Header carries a description, unit of measure and status (New, Under Development, Certified, Closed). Production BOM Lines carry the component item, quantity per parent, scrap percentage, routing link code, and unit of measure. A BOM becomes usable only when its status is Certified.

Routings, operations and resources

A BC Routing Header carries a routing number, description and status. Routing Lines carry the operation number, work-centre or machine-centre code, setup time, run time, wait time, move time, concurrent capacities, and a routing link code that ties the operation to BOM components for flushing.

The production-order lifecycle

The mismatch at the Released/Started boundary is the most operationally dangerous. In BC, a released order immediately permits posting consumption and output. In D365, you must explicitly advance the order from Released to Started before the first material-issue journal or route-card journal can be posted.

Flushing methods

The Pick + Forward and Pick + Backward variants do not have a single-field equivalent in D365. They are re-expressed as a combination of warehouse-work release (which handles the physical pick) and a standard flushing principle (which handles the accounting consumption).

Assembly management — the genuine gap

Assemble-to-stock (ATS): An Assembly Order consumes components from inventory and produces the assembled item into stock. It carries an Assembly BOM (component list), a single posting that debits component cost and credits finished-goods cost, and minimal scheduling.

Manufacturing costing

Material cost: Driven by the item's unit cost (Standard, Average, FIFO, LIFO, or Specific) multiplied by the BOM-line quantity. Capacity cost: Direct unit cost and indirect cost percentage on the work/machine centre, multiplied by operation time. Capacity ledger entries record time consumed and cost applied.

Master planning and Planning Optimization

Requisition Worksheet: Generates purchase and transfer suggestions based on reorder policies (Fixed Reorder Qty, Maximum Qty, Order, Lot-for-Lot) and safety stock. Planning Worksheet: Runs regenerative or net-change MRP, exploding demand through BOMs and routings, respecting lead times, dampeners, and capacity constraints (if enabled).
