Introduction
Fixed assets in AX 2012 and D365 share an identity that runs deeper than most modules. Asset groups, depreciation profiles, posting profiles, acquisition and disposal transactions — the tables are the same, the forms are recognisable, and the data upgrade carries the entire fixed-asset register forward.
The Book construct in D365
In current D365, both are replaced by a single Book (AssetBook). The PostToGeneralLedger flag determines whether the book creates GL entries. A book assigned to the Current posting layer with posting enabled is functionally identical to an AX 2012 value model.
Depreciation profiles and methods
Each method is configured in a depreciation profile (AssetDepreciationProfile). The profile specifies the method, the percentage or factor, the calculation basis (original cost or current NBV), and the convention.
Fixed-asset posting profiles
Fixed-asset posting profiles define which GL accounts receive each transaction type. The hierarchy is:
Revaluation, impairment, and disposal
AX 2012 fixed-asset revaluation adjusts the gross book value (and optionally the accumulated depreciation) of assets in a group, posting the difference to a revaluation reserve account.
Assets under construction
Assets under construction (AuC) accumulate cost during a construction or implementation period and are capitalised to a final fixed asset when complete. In AX 2012 and D365, the standard path is:
Enterprise asset management
Functional locations (EntAssetFunctionalLocation) — a structural hierarchy representing physical locations (buildings, production lines, machine positions). Maintenance assets (EntAssetObjectTable) — the individual maintained objects (equipment, vehicles, IT assets).
