Translating FI-AA and PM into fixed assets and asset management

Introduction
SAP's asset estate spans two module families that are closely related but architecturally separate. Financial Asset Accounting (FI-AA) handles the accounting lifecycle — acquisition, depreciation, revaluation, and retirement — in the general ledger.
SAP FI-AA: the depreciation engine
SAP FI-AA organises fixed-asset accounting around a small set of configuration objects that form a hierarchy from the most general to the most specific.
D365 fixed assets: books and posting layers
D365 fixed assets has no chart of depreciation. Each legal entity defines its own set of books. A book in D365 is the functional equivalent of a depreciation area; it calculates asset values independently and may or may not post to the G/L.
SAP PM: the operational maintenance model
SAP PM manages the physical lifecycle of maintained objects through a hierarchy that mirrors the physical structure of the plant.
D365 Asset Management
Functional location (EntAssetFunctionalLocation). Identical in concept to SAP functional locations. The hierarchy depth is configurable; the mask encoding the structural path mirrors SAP's encoding convention.
Linking fixed assets to maintenance assets
The fixed-asset to maintenance-asset link is the most functionally important integration point between the two module families, and the one most commonly mis-handled in migrations.
