Maps NetSuite Locations, Bins, Advanced Inventory lot/serial tracking and per-item costing methods to the D365 inventory dimension model (site, warehouse, location, batch, serial, status), item model groups, and the Warehouse Management System. The central rethink is that D365's mandatory Site dimension has no NetSuite counterpart: every item movement in D365 requires a site value, so site design must be completed before any inventory data is loaded.
Inventory is where the operational gap between NetSuite and D365 is widest. NetSuite's inventory model was designed for visibility and financial control; D365's model was designed for large-scale distribution and manufacturing operations with physical warehouse execution.
D365 organises every stock position across a hierarchy of storage dimensions and tracking dimensions:
NetSuite Locations are flat: a Location is either a physical facility or a logical grouping, and all Locations sit at the same level with no parent-child hierarchy. D365 requires a strict Site → Warehouse hierarchy.
NetSuite's Advanced Inventory module enables lot and serial tracking via Inventory Detail sub-records on transaction lines. Each detail line records the lot/serial number and quantity. The lot or serial record carries the creation date, expiry date, and any custom fields added by the customer.
NetSuite supports per-item costing methods set on the item record: Average Cost, FIFO, LIFO, Standard Cost, Group Average, and Specific Identification (for serialised high-value items). The method is a field on the Inventory Item record.
D365 distinguishes between a physical inventory update and a financial inventory update. Receiving a product receipt physically updates on-hand quantities immediately but does not post a financial GL entry until the vendor invoice is matched and posted. Issuing from a sales order packing slip physically reduces inventory;
NetSuite provides bin management through its Basic Bin Management and Advanced Bin Management features (the latter part of the Warehouse Management SuiteApp). Advanced bin management enables directed put-away rules and pick strategies at a basic level.
D365 requires a mandatory Site storage dimension that NetSuite has no equivalent for; site design is the first inventory architecture decision and must precede warehouse creation and item loading. NetSuite Locations map to D365 warehouses under a site; NetSuite Bins map to warehouse locations;
