M3 manufacturing spans two sub-modules: MFS (Manufacturing Order System, discrete manufacturing) and PMS (Process Manufacturing System, recipe/batch manufacturing). Both use product structures (MPDMAT) and routings (MPDOPE) to define what an item is made from and how it is made.
MPDMAT holds the bill-of-materials for a manufactured item: a header (item, version, effectivity dates, yield, batch size) and lines (component item, quantity, scrap factor, operation reference, issue method).
M3 manufacturing orders (MFHEAD) progress through a status sequence: Created, Released, Started, Reported as Finished, Closed. Each status transition triggers material reservations, operation scheduling, or financial postings:
M3 supports co-production: the manufacturing order produces a primary item (the main output) and one or more co-products or by-products. The cost of the production run is allocated across the outputs by a configured percentage or sales price proportion.
M3's cost accounting (CAS module) structures production costs into cost elements: typically Material, Labour, Machine, Overhead (fixed and variable), and Subcontracting. Each cost element is a numeric code that appears in the cost roll-up and in actual cost follow-up.
M3 accumulates work-in-progress costs as manufacturing orders progress through their lifecycle. When the order is closed, actual material and operation costs are compared against standard and the difference (variance) is posted to GL variance accounts.
