Translating Branch/Plant, the Cardex, and inventory costing

How JD Edwards EnterpriseOne concentrates inventory truth in the Branch/Plant, the flexible Location format, and the Item Ledger (F4111) — universally known as the Cardex — and how D365 decomposes the same reality across Site, Warehouse, InventTrans, and InventSum; plus a worked comparison of F4105 cost methods against D365 item model group costing.

What you will be able to do

Introduction

Every JD Edwards EnterpriseOne (JDE) implementation is organised around the Branch/Plant: a business unit that, once flagged in the Branch/Plant Constants (P41001, table F41001), becomes the operational home for a set of inventory, manufacturing, and distribution activities.

Branch/Plant: the inventory boundary, and its split into Site and Warehouse

The Branch/Plant Constants (P41001) turn an ordinary business unit into an inventory-capable one. Once flagged, that business unit carries branch-level defaults that shape everything transacted against it: a default location format, a default commitment method, backorder rules, a default document type set, and a general ledger class that…

Location: the flexible format versus D365 warehouse locations

JDE does not treat Location as freeform text, even though it is stored as a single field (up to 20 characters) on F41021. Each Branch/Plant defines its own location format: user-defined segments, each with a name, a length, and a position, assembled into one composite string.

Item Location and the Cardex: JDE's single ledger versus D365's transaction-plus-aggregate model

F41021, Item Location, is the current-balance table: quantity on hand, quantity soft-committed, and quantity hard-committed, held by item, Branch/Plant, location, and lot, updated in real time as each transaction posts. It answers "how much do I have, right now, in this specific place."

Lot and serial control: memo lots, lot status, and D365 tracking dimensions

Lot-controlled items in JDE carry attributes on the Lot Master (F4108): expiration date, grade or potency fields common in process and pharmaceutical industries, and a Lot Status Code. A blank status means the lot is available;

Commitments: soft, hard, and the D365 reservation hierarchy

Commitment method is one of the Branch/Plant Constants, and it governs how availability is protected as orders are entered. A soft commitment reduces the available quantity at the item/branch aggregate level in F41021 without tying it to a specific location or lot;

Costing methods: F4105, the primary cost method, and D365 item model groups

F4105, Item Cost, can hold several simultaneous cost records per item and Branch/Plant (and, for lot-costed items, per location), each tagged with a cost method from UDC table 40/CM.

Cardex-to-GL reconciliation: a standing discipline on both sides

Because the Cardex updates the instant a transaction is entered, while the corresponding general ledger batch can post through a separate step, mature JDE shops maintain a standing discipline of reconciling the Cardex's extended value — by item, Branch/Plant, and G/L class — against the corresponding inventory account balance.

JD Edwards concentrates inventory truth in the Branch/Plant, the flexible Location, Item Location (F41021), and the Cardex (F4111) — a small number of powerful, tightly coupled constructs.
